FAURE LANDFILL SITE CLOSURE
PROJECT TITLE: |
FAURE LANDFILL SITE CLOSURE | |||||
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: |
The Faure Landfill, also known as the Blue Downs landfill is one of six landfill sites in the Cape Metropolitan Area (CMA), which are owned and operated by the Cape Metropolitan Council (CMC). A study seeking to compile an ‘Operations to Closure Permit’ for the Faure landfill was conducted in November 2000. The decision by the CMC in association with the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF) was in response primarily to the landfill’s close proximity to the Cape Flats Aquifer and resulting threat regarding potential groundwater contamination, which was exacerbated by the fact that this particular site does not have a protective lining. |
